da betcris: Everton have made their first signing and it’s probably going to be the best one.
da gbg bet: Unfortunately, in terms of signings, there hasn’t been much to talk about at Goodison Park. Ronald Koeman’s arrival on the back of the £100m war chest provided by the new owner, should have started a rampage through the Everton doors, but thus so far not even a hinge has squeaked at its opening.
Despite the huge amount of money to spend on players, Koeman might be finding it harder than he expected to recruit the players he thinks he needs.
Players linked with Everton have already decided to pursue careers elsewhere and deals that potentially looked good to go appear to have stalled.
We are only just half way through July, but the end of August will soon be here and the beginning of a new Premier League season will be here even sooner.
Therefore the new Everton boss needs to pull his finger out.
However, despite his best efforts and of those around him, how attractive is Everton to a player?
It has been suggested that three or four of their top stars may well leave, in fact John Stones is certain to leave at long last, with others in abeyance.
What message that gives out to incoming players is up for debate, but as a team, Everton were woeful last season and whilst they have aspirations of a top ten finish next term, so does every other club.
Everton can’t offer Europe, but there is a desire to do better, to bring in better players, to compete from here on in and to challenge for silverware. But these are all maybe’s.
The players that have been linked with The Toffees are internationals and are already with clubs in Europe. Pelle has rushed off to China with money in his eyes whilst the others appear confused at their next port of call.
Everton are a big club and the potential at Goodison Park is vast. They have won nine league titles, five FA Cups and a European Cup Winners’ Cup, compared to most other teams outside of the top four or five places, they are head and shoulders above them. Their history is alluring, the fanbase is large and the thirst for success is huge.
But big budgets though do not always bring big players and if they do, then the expectation increases and so does the pressure to see it through.
Everton are out to show intent, but it will be down to Koeman to sell his vision of a new dawn at Goodison Park and for the potential recruits to buy into it.
What he needs to do initially is to try and pacify and keep the players that want away before bringing in new faces. And not just keep the players, but find out how to bring the best out of them and develop them for the benefit of the team.
With so much on offer elsewhere, he will need to be polishing up his best sales patter because the competition for a narrow field of quality will disappear all too quickly.
