da casino: Crystal Palace have successfully produced a number of excellent youth prospects in recent years from their academy, including the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Wilfried Zaha.
Whilst the former has departed and the latter seems destined for a move away from south London, the Palace production line is in full swing with another generation of potential stars making their way through the ranks at Selhurst Park. And it is simply impossible to ignore the talent of rising star Niya Kirby within the Premier League side’s array of talent.
After joining Tottenham Hotspur in the early stages of his youth career, Kirby made the move to Palace, seemingly enticed by the prospect of making the grade at a top-flight side who, in the current campaign, are attempting to extend their stay in the division to eight seasons.
Although Kirby is yet to make the grade in Palace’s first-team under manager Roy Hodgson, his talent is undeniable and chairman Steve Parish will be hoping that the promising youngster can reach the heights that former academy graduates Wan-Bissaka and Zaha have reached in their time with the club.
After making his first appearance for Blackpool in February earlier this year, his manager Terry McPhillips was full of gushing praise, per football.london.
“I thought he was terrific.
“He’s not fazed, he can beat people and he’s got a great temperament.
“He passes the ball nicely, does his defending and he’ll have a fight with a big lad, like he did when he came on last week. I like him a lot.”
He finished his short term spell with one goal and three assists to show from 11 League One appearances and also won April’s Player of the Month award.
In October 2018 Kirby signed a new contract with the club that will keep him at the club until October 2018, and Parish spoke out regarding his delight at being able to secure the 19-year-old’s services for an extended period.
“I am delighted that we have been able to sign Nya to a longer contract,” he said.
“We are a club who has a proud history of bringing young players through the ranks, and this is another deal that shows our commitment to continuing that tradition.”
Although Wan-Bissaka was sold to Manchester United in a reported £50m deal that will have unquestionably bolstered Palace’s finances, there must come a point at which Parish and the Palace board need to decide what kind of club they are.
In Kirby, Palace have not only a talented player but a youngster who could hold a degree of symbolism as to the ambition of the south London side.
Will they be forced to sell yet again? Or will they manage to hold onto their talent and establish themselves as a top-ten Premier League outfit, competing with the likes of West Ham, Wolves and Leicester for a place in the top six.
It remains to be seen how far Palace’s ambitions will rise, but the club’s ability to hold onto Kirby and other quality academy products could go a long way to determining their future.
