da winzada777: According to Tuttomercatoweb, Newcastle are among a host of European clubs interested in Kasimpasa’s Mbaye Diagne, who has been on fire in the Turkish Super Lig this season – despite his impressive strike rate, this would be yet another poor bit of business from the Tyneside outfit.
What’s the word?
da dobrowin: Well, Tuttomercatoweb reports that the Magpies could battle with the likes of fellow Premier League clubs West Ham, Fulham and Wolves, as well as some of the top sides from the French and Spanish top flights, for the Senegalese’s signature.
Of the three English clubs linked with the striker, Newcastle are in most need of reinforcements up front as they currently rely heavily on West Brom loanee Salomon Rondon to put the ball in the back of the net – no one else looks all that likely.
While Transfermarkt value Diagne at just £4.95m – a fee surely too small for even the tight-pocketed Mike Ashley to deny – he would most likely become the latest on a long list of poor signings and, with Rafa Benitez afforded little backing as it is, it would be a mistake the Magpies cannot afford to make.
One-season wonder?
There is no denying that the 27-year-old has a phenomenal goals-to-game ratio – he has scored 20 goals in just 17 games – but it would be a grave error for Newcastle to splash what little cash they have on a player who has been fairly average in most seasons prior to this one and, as it is important to remember, he has plied his trade in the Hungarian and Saudi leagues.
What the Magpies so clearly need is pace to maximise the potential of Rondon’s physical prowess but, at a lumbering 6-foot-3, Diagne is completely the wrong mould and this lack of mobility would mean that he offers no more than Joselu to the attack.
While it would be interesting to see if this goal-machine would be able to replicate his tallies in England, United should set about finding a strike partner who compliments their big Venezuelan rather than copying him.
What do you think, Newcastle fans? Should the club find a different hitman or do you think Diagne is exactly what you need? Let us know by voting in the poll below…
