In games that end 1-0, invariably your defence will have had to play well to produce that kind of winning result. And against Tottenham on Saturday evening, Liverpool’s rearguard was every bit as solid as you could have imagined.
The Reds didn’t give the home side a genuine sniff all game, with Jose Mourinho’s men restricted to just four shots on target over the course of the 90 minutes.

And one man who was at the heart of that, was Joe Gomez. The England international enjoyed a fine display alongside Virgil van Dijk, making two tackles, three clearances and one interception as per Sofascore.
No clues: Can you name the season these iconic Liverpool images belong to?
And in possession, he was ridiculously good too. The 22-year-old had 130 touches (the most of any player), and made 107 total passes at an accuracy of 89%. After seeing his performance, Liverpool fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the defender.
Some fans hailed Gomez for his work in helping Liverpool begin to pick up clean sheets again, with the 22-year-old now being involved in shut-outs in his last five Premier League games.
A couple of fans suggested that Gomez is rather under-rated, with one supporter suggesting that he is on a “par with VVD” for the way he is defending.
With Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip providing Gomez with significant competition, ensuring the Reds are sturdy defensively and keeping clean sheets gives the latter a vital advantage when it comes to staying in the starting line-up.
Building up a partnership with Van Dijk means Klopp will have a hard time dropping him from the team, whilst his versatility of playing at centre-back and at full-back makes him an important part of the side.
Meanwhile, Liverpool fans react to Jurgen Klopp’s comments on this midfield ace.
