da bet vitoria: According to reports in the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino is ready to give striker Vincent Janssen one more season to prove his worth following a difficult first campaign for the club.
What’s the word, then?
da cassino: Well, the Netherlands international arrived at White Hart Lane in a £17m deal from AZ Alkmaar last summer, and it was hoped that he would bring some real competition to Harry Kane up top.
However, he struggled to make an impression and his disappointing record in goal had brought his future into doubt, according to the Daily Mail, with Pochettino looking for someone who can push Kane even further.
The Argentine boss is ready to give 23-year-old another chance though, with the Daily Mail saying that Spurs are likely to now cool any interest in bringing a new centre-forward to the club before the start of the new season next month as a result.
How did Janssen do last season?
While many of his appearances came from the substitutes’ bench, the Dutchman failed to show signs of replicating the prolific goalscoring record he had in the Eredivisie.
The striker scored just two goals – one a penalty – and provided a further two assists in 27 Premier League appearances, while he netted six in 38 outings in all competitions.
Pochettino will certainly be looking for an improvement on that record next term, as Spurs once again look to compete for the English top flight title and make an impression in the group stages of the Champions League at their temporary Wembley home.
Has Pochettino made the right decision?
He probably has, yes.
While Janssen certainly deserves more than one season to make an impression considering the majority of his appearances were from the substitutes’ bench, Tottenham also know that Kane is their undoubted first choice and it isn’t easy to find a striker that is willing to play second fiddle to him.
What’s the verdict, then?
Well, with the sheer volume of games Tottenham will have next season on the big Wembley pitch, Pochettino will need all of the options he can get in what is going to be another long season, and Janssen will hopefully have a point to prove to his manager and the club’s supporters as he looks to become a hit.
