da bet vitoria： Neil Lennon personally scouted Partizan Belgrade centre-back Strahinja Pavlovic during his side’s Europa League clash on Thursday, according to The Press Association, via The Evening Express.
What’s the story?
The 18-year-old central defender was watched by the Celtic boss during Thursday night’s Europa League qualifier against Connah’s Quay Nomads. The youngster had a quiet evening as his side strolled to a 1-0 victory in Wales.
According to the report, Lennon will have witnessed Pavlovic start attacks from deep and cause a threat at the other end of the pitch, two traits that would be welcomed at Parkhead, where the Hoops often have most of the ball.
And Lennon travelling to personally check on the teenage defender could well be a sign that there is more than just an inkling of interest, as he looks to add to the four players he’s brought to the club already this summer.
An ominous sign for Jozo
Despite three of the four arrivals (Christopher Jullien, Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo and Hatem Abd Elhamed) being defenders, it would be no surprise to see some more defensive cover signed this summer, having lost so many bodies.
Another contributing factor as to why Lennon might’ve been scouting the Serbian is the possibility of him losing another of his defenders, and, for once, it’s got nothing to do with Kieran Tierney.
Jozo Simunovic has been linked with a move to Champions League side Lille this summer, per The Scottish Sun, so it’s only natural the Scottish champions will have sent out feelers for potential replacements.
Simunovic’s early-season performances have shown that he could be on the cusp of a breakthrough season at the Celts. Yet, interest from a side who can offer guaranteed Champions League football might be too tempting for him as he approaches his prime years.
With Jullien and Kristoffer Ajer potentially the preferred partnership (given Ajer’s obvious ability and the Frenchman’s transfer fee of £7m), he might see it as the right time to get his move away from Parkhead. And with the club scouting Pavlovic, it looks like they’ve thought about the scenario too.
