Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud has rejected the chance to join Newcastle, according to Sky Sports.
What’s the story?
Newcastle have been looking to add to their striking options during this transfer window, with Paco Alcacer said to be on their radar before he completed a move to Villarreal from Borussia Dortmund.
It has now been revealed that the Toon attempted to take the 97-time France international to St James’ Park, but the 6 foot 4 player himself turned down the move. He either wants to stay in London or move abroad.
Suits Newcastle
Having been involved in just seven matches in all competitions for the Blues so far this term, Giroud is clearly eager to make a move to keep himself in Didier Deschamps’ plans for the European Championships this summer. A number of clubs are said to be interested in him, including Tottenham.

It could have been a fantastic signing for Steve Bruce. The north east side are strong in the air, having won 21 aerial duels in the Premier League so far this campaign – only six teams have won more. Both Andy Carroll and Joelinton have averaged over five per match – the former Arsenal forward is a man who regularly averaged over three during his career. Not just that, though, Giroud has experience at the very highest of levels – he has even played and won in a World Cup final. Bruce will no doubt be disappointed by this failed attempt – it is back to the drawing board for now.
