da dobrowin: Tottenham Hotspur believe that Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes may not be a worthwhile signing this summer, per the Daily Star.
What’s the word?
The report claims that Spurs are ready to join Manchester United in the race to secure the signature of the 24-year-old, with his agent currently in London to negotiate with any interested parties.
However, they are currently prioritising a move for Real Betis star Giovani Lo Celso, with a bid of £62m already rejected by the Spanish club.
Nevertheless, the report claims that Spurs have monitored Fernandes for some time, though they are yet to be sold on his valuation of £71m.
As such, they are set to push ahead in their bid to secure Lo Celso before making a decision on whether or not they should pursue the Portugal international.
A phenomenal talent
Fernandes may well be the best possible target Spurs can secure.
He is of course playing in a weaker league than Lo Celso, with Liga NOS a significant step down from La Liga, but his statistics don’t lie.
Per WhoScored, he scored 20 goals and laid on 13 assists in 33 appearances – that’s a rate of a goal involvement per game – while averaging 3.2 key passes per game as well as 3.6 shots, while he is fouled 2.4 times per game.
Lo Celso has 1.6 key passes, 2.3 shots and is fouled twice per 90 minutes, while he scored a total of nine goals and had four assists in La Liga.
Christian Eriksen, by comparison, has 2.1 key passes and 2.4 shots per game, while he is fouled, on average, 0.5 times. He scored eight goals and provided 12 assists in the Premier League.
It remains to be seen if Fernandes could make the step up in the Premier League but it appears bizarre that Spurs are not sold on his valuation.
According to his numbers, he may be an even safer investment than Lo Celso and an upgrade on Eriksen.
