Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Arsenal legend Ian Wright has hailed the signings of both William Saliba and Dani Ceballos after both moves were confirmed on Thursday.
What did he say?
Reports in recent weeks had suggested that the Gunners were keen on bringing the pair to the Emirates, but faced intense competition from north London rivals Tottenham for their signatures.
However, after signing St Etienne’s Saliba for a reported £27m, and completing a season-long loan swoop for Real Madrid’s Ceballos, Wright insisted that it was two great pieces of business for Arsenal.

He said: “I didn’t think we’d get him (Saliba). I felt that with the clubs that were chasing him, for us to make to it happen, that is a a very sought-after player and we’ve got him. We cannot compete with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool in buying the finished article yet. Someone like Saliba is the future and we’ve got him.
“Ceballos has got a little bit of fire in his belly. Hopefully he can come to us and prove that he’s a top player and hopefully we can make it permanent. I think these two signings are very progressive signings, alongside with Martinelli. We’ve got to be excited. There’s so much negativity about everything and what’s happening, but the fact is we’ve got to give our team a chance to start the season and see what we do from there. I’m very, very excited about the season.”
For now and for the future
Make no mistake, the Gunners have pulled off a brilliant coup in getting deals done for both Ceballos and Saliba. The former was excellent at this summer’s U21 European Championship, whilst the latter enjoyed an impressive breakthrough campaign in France.
The duo were hot property and it was no surprise to see them being linked with a whole host of clubs, including Spurs. Ceballos can bring the Gunners some much-needed creativity and drive from midfield; something that they have been lacking since Santi Cazorla was fully fit and firing.
In Saliba, Emery’s side have a diamond in the rough, who with an extra full season under his belt with St Etienne, could become a much more polished central defender when he eventually arrives at the Emirates next summer. As Wright says, the Gunners should be excited.
