Sergio Aguero was the headline maker at the Etihad Stadium as he plundered a hat trick against Wigan Athletic to prolong Manchester City’s storming start to the new season.
The Argentinian put the Latics to the sword with a majestic solo performance as he paid off yet another chunk of the £38 million spent on him in the summer taking his goals tally to six in four games.
Roberto Mancini’s men were rampant from the first whistle with Aguero, David Silva and the reinstated Carlos Tevez terrorising the visitors defence and were behind as soon as the 13th minute with the former Atletico Madrid man smashing the ball into the corner from Silva’s cutback.
Tevez should have made it two but his tame penalty was saved by Ali Al Habsi before captain Vincent Kompany and Michael Richards rattled the crossbar as Wigan struggled to come with the constant pressure laid on them from the home side.
Aguero completed his treble in the second half as City didn’t break stride and he underlined his undoubted class with two quality finishes to put the gloss on City’s fourth consecutive win of the season.
The 23-year-old latched on to Samir Nasri’s poked through ball to cooly tuck the ball home in the 63rd minute. Silva then had all the time in the world to pick out his partner in crime angled run pinging a wonderful ball into Aguero who slotted home superbly to complete his first hat trick as a City player.
